I ve lived on a few different floors in nyc and in an elevator building and i prefer the first floor.

First floor apartments may be easier to break into since the windows are at street level. The best is a raised 1st floor with no neighbors under you imo still get good natural light no people peeking in your windows easily since they re above eye level you can walk around as late as you want without worrying about pissing off anyone living below you moving and bringing in groceries is a breeze with so few stairs. Our neighbors who live on the 5th floor with dogs kids and groceries really earn their stay.

I lived in a place on the first floor below an elephant on the 2nd floor that stomped all day long 4am midnight. That said i like to think that being so close to the street and in easy view of onlookers discourages cat burglars. Been in search for a lane house apartment a friend that has recently moved in one 3 months ago advises me against it. However after looking at all of the pros and cons of actually living in a beach front condo it just wasn t worth it to us.

I really disagree that a first floor apt is more difficult to sell than a 6th floor walk up. The first floor of an apartment is ideal for bringing in heavy loads such as your furniture when moving or that big trip to the grocery store. I realize i m in the minority but i come and go a lot so i think that has a lot to do with wanting to be on the first floor.

There is no noise from upstairs. Seriously you don t like the ground floor. I don t think first floor is a good idea. Our current building is a five floor walk up.

You may have a bum leg or some other condition that makes stairs a pain. Unless we re home we don t leave our windows open which can make it a bit stuffy. If you re the type who enjoys frequent trips to the supermarket but doesn t like the added exercise of lugging your purchases to the top floor the ground floor might be the best choice. Here on the 1st floor life is easier despite the noise.

You won t be doing that every day unless you mean carrying groceries etc.
